The Five Elements

ĦĦĦĦThe originality of the group sculpture 'the Five Elements' in the Ziwei Garden on the Century Boulevard is derived from the philosophy of the inter-promoting and checking relation in five elements in the ancient times of China. Inter-promotion means "wood promoting fire, fire promoting earth, earth promoting gold, gold promoting water and water promoting wood". The checking relation means "water checking fire, fire checking gold, gold checking wood, wood checking earth and earth checking water". Things and materials in the world promote and check each other, changing constantly, and push the movement and development of all things on the earth, cycling and reciprocating without end. Taking the models of the five inscriptions "gold, wood, water, fire and earth"on the tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty as the designing basic elements, is composed of five sculpture parts. "Gold" in triangle stands in the middle in the form of a pagoda. "Wood" in cube is assembled in the shape of bold incisions. "Fire" is in the shape of flames. The three are all made of cast copper. "Water" is the water-like curves in the form of the smooth hieroglyphic writings and made of stainless steel. "Earth" is made of the natural rocks and cut into shapes. Under the guidance and attention of Mr. Chen Yifei and through the amendments by Mr. Chen in person for many times, the creative group of spent more than one year on their industrious and diligent labor and got the group sculpture successfully completed in the end.
