  • On August 27, Pudong Shangri-la is opened for business.
  • On August 18, Shanghai Commodity Exchange moved into Shanghai Commodity Exchange Building and formally started its exchange business.
  • On July 29, spearheaded by the Shanghai Branch of Japan Fuji Bank, nine Chinese and foreign banks provided Lujiazui Shareholding Co. with a loan totaling 50 million dollars for the infrastructure in Lujiazui Central Financial District.
  • On July 17, the completion ceremony for Shanghai World Financial center, invested by Forest Overseas Co., Ltd., OECF and other Japanese companies, was held.
  • On July 8, the roof contraction for Shanghai Puxiang Square, invested by South Korea's Puxiang Iron Manufacturer, was completed.
  • On July 1, the U.S. President Bill Clinton visited Shanghai Stock Building which is located in Lujiazui Central Financial District.
  • On May 19, Exhibition Center started its operations.
  • On May 18, the roof structure for Shanghai International Shipping Mansion, invested by COSCO with a total investment of US$200 million, was completed.
  • On May 1, Shanghai Urban Sculpture International Symposium was held.
  • On April 10, the ground-breaking ceremony for Rui Yuan Complex, the Phase II Project at Ship Square and invested by Ruizhou Real Estate Development Co., Ltd. of China Shipping Industry General Company, was held.
  • On April 6, The Phase II Project for Orient Pearl was started. It consists of cinemas, shopping malls, yacht quays and other facilities.
  • On January 22, Shanghai Planning Committee endorsed the feasibility study of The Century Avenue (from Yan'an East Road Tunnel to Yanggao Road). The projected investment will be RMB1.18 billion. Its total length is 3,819 meters. It is expected to become a sightseeing boulevard and secondary traffic artery.
