ĦĦĦĦLocated in the coastal area of Jiang Zheng, Pudong New Area and Zhu Qiao, Nan Hui County, Pudong International Airport covers an area of about 30 square kilometers, about 30 kilometers away from the city center, People's Square.
ĦĦĦĦThe new airport is planned to have 4 main parallel long-distance runways of 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide, and two short-distance and stand-by side-wind runways. The airport is to be equipped with modern facilities compatible with its capacity. Its planned yearly handling capacity is 60 to 80 million passengers and 5-million-ton cargoes. It will become the gateway airport of East China and an important airport of Asia. Its investment is 40 billion RMB yuan and its construction is divided into three phases. The task in the first phase is to build one main runway, the main airport building of 200,000 square meters, a terminal for international flights, and supporting facilities, designed to handle 16-million passengers and 1.3-million-ton cargoes every year. The first-phase investment is about 16 billion RMB yuan. The first-phase construction is planned to be completed by the end of 1999.
