Metro Line 2 Built up and Put into Operation

The first phase of Shanghai Metro Line 2 Project was formally open to traffic in the morning of June 11th. The first phase of Shanghai Metro Line 2 Project is the major practical and realistic project during the Ninth Five-year Plan period of Shanghai. Its building-up and opening to traffic will play an important role in the aspects of further improving the urban traffic in Shanghai and promoting the linked development between east and west banks of the Huangpu River.

With the east and west trend, the first phase of Shanghai Project runs from Zhongshan Park in Puxi to Longyang Road Station in Pudong, crossing the Huangpu River and covering the whole length of 16.3 kilometers. There are twelve underground stations in all, six of which are set up across Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone. Starting construction on December 28th of 1995, the project was successfully completed through the hard working of more than ten thousand constructors. The project implemented separately the operation experiment and adjustment of the up line on September 20th of 1999 and that of the down line on January 30th of 2000. The completion and opening to traffic of the first phase of Shanghai Metro Line 2 Project symbolize that Shanghai has had the subway traffic lines with the cross-lines-joint. It will be more convenient for citizen to go on journeys and it will be more prosperous for Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone.
