The Sharp Increase of Vehicles along with the Cancel of Tolls on the River
Since Shanghai canceled the tolls on the bridges and tunnels on and under the Huangpu River on May Lst, the rate of vehicle flow across the river has increased sharply. According to the statistics from Shanghai Huangpu River Tunnel and Bridge Development Company Ltd., the summation of the vehicle flow rates from May 1st to 8th increased by thirty percent, compared with the same term of the last year. That only counted the vehicles crossing Nanpu, Yangpu and Xupu Bridges and the tunnel of Dapu Road. The above statistics has fully shown the impetus of the new policy towards the traffic on both banks of the Huangpu River.
On the basis of the incomplete statistics, during the holidays from May Lst to May 7th, the summation of the flow rates of vehicles crossing Nanpu, Yangpu and Xupu Bridges and the tunnel of Dapu Road has increased ten percent, compared with the same term of last year. The highest value of the vehicle flow rate on odd date and in dual directions appeared at Xupu Bridge on May 5th, reaching 331,038 times and more than twice the number of the last year at the same term. The number of sightseeing on Nanpu Bridge also increased to a great extent during the period of the festival. There were altogether more than thirty thousand tourists at home and abroad ascending the bridge to look into distance. After the holidays ended, the vehicle flow rate on May 8th thrust sharply again and increased about twenty percent, compared with the same term of last year. The rising range of the vehicle flow rate at Xupu Bridge is higher than that of the other two bridges.
