Yang pu District,situated in the northeast of the city of Shanghai and facing Pudong New Area across the Huangpu River,covers an area of 51.6 square kilometers. Within its confines there are 22 universities and colleges,over 700 industrial and mining enterprises and institutions, and 1,000,000 regular inhabitants. The district is easily accessible. The Yangpu Bridge and the Inner-ring Road link up the city's and the district's hubs of communications and such economic,financial and high-tech development zones as Hongqiao, Caohejing, Waigaoqiao, Lujiazui, Jinqiao and Zhangjiang. The geographical location is very advantageous.

With the continual deepening of the city's reform and opening-up, the tertiary industry in Yangpu District is developing vigorously. The 18 specialized companies and 7 Sino-foreign joint ventures under the supervision of the district's committee of commerce have a network of 1,800 trading establishments scattering among the various residential quarters in the district with a total business area of 450,000 square meters, a storage area of 12,000 square meters,over 3,000 economic managerial personnel and about 30,000 commercial workers and staff members. They provide excellent marketing service for the enormous consumer market of the whole district. The 44 industrial enterprises run by the commercial units with more than 3,600 staff members and workers, produce various kinds of foodstuff, clothing,etc. A number of electric appliance products have been exported to Japan, the United States, and the Southeast Asian nations. The gross sales volume of the whole district for the year 1995 was RMB 7,150,000,000 yuan.

In recent years, the network of trading establishments in Ahshan Area on either side of Kongjiang Road has developed swiftly. The Industrial and Commercial Finance Building, the International Ltd.,San Feng Superfines Commercial Building, Sanlian Commercial Building,Yongle Superfines Commercial Building,and Shanghai Friendship Store have been completed and started business. Yangpu Center and The Far-East International Building are under construction, while New Shanghai Hotel, Zhongyuan Emporium, The Shopping Center of the Zhongyuan Residential Area(namely Nengjiang Hotel), Huangxing Grassland,and other projects are planned to be constructed. This overall plan of construction including a great number of commercial and banking buildings, apartment/office buildings,high-class apartments,etc, will give Yangpu District a new overall environment.
