Yangpu District lies in the northeast of Shanghai. As the largest general industrial area in Shanghai, it covers 51.93 square kilometers and has a population of 1,080,000.

Yangpu Bridge--the first cable suspension bridge in the world, is over Huangpu River, joining to the Inner-Ring Road, near Waigaoqiao, Lujiazui, the trade and financial centres in Pudong Development Zone, and downtown of Shanghai. It enjoys convenient traffic and becomes one of the main hubs of communications. There are 21 berths of 10,000-ton-capacity along the 16-kilometer-long shore of Huangpu River, with an annual handling capacity of 30 million ton. The annual transportation capacity of Yangpu Railway Station is more than 4 million tons. The storehouse area in ports and stations is near 5 square kilometres. There are more than 200 roads and 45 bus lines in the district. Two power stations, two water plants and Yangshupu gaswork have plenty energy supply, and Kongjiang Post and Communicaton Building has perfect communication facilities. Wujiaochang Area has entered in the list of planned sub-centre of Shanghai, and will be prosperous.

The development of industry here has a long history. There are more than 1,000 factories of textile, light industry, mechanical electronics, ship-building, metallurgy, chemical industry, meters and instruments, etc., with complete classes of industries and advanced technology. The output volume accounts for one fifth of the whole city. The output volume and export earnings of the district industries are listed the first in all the districts of Shanghai. The products are sold all over the world, winning a good fame.

The third industry is booming. The commercial network is spreading all over the district. Some commercial centers of different charactristics have risen up. Yangpu Commercial Town, East Asia Commercial Building and Jinfeng Building with large dimensions will be finished one after another. There are more than 50 financial institutions in the district.

Yangpu District is the most concentrated district with colleges, universities and scientific research institutions. A lot of famous professors and talents of science and technology are working in 25 colleges and universities, such as well-known Fudan, Tongji, Aquatic Products College, ect., as well as 55 scientific research institutions. They give guarantee of science and technology strength to the improvement of productivity and economic prosperity.

Yangpu District is an advanced green area in the country. It has 10 public gardens and parks like Gongqing Forest Park, Yangpu Park, ect., and over 100 neiborhood gardens. The residential environment is very pleasant with greenery. Highness Garden, Jinpeng Building, Peace Gardern, Yangming New Town, ect. which are high quality buildings for business and residence, cooperated with overseas businessmen, have begun to be constructed.
