Xuhui District is one of Shanghai's downtown districts, with an area of 54.76 square kilometers and 780,000 residents. It has the lowest population density among all urban districts but the highest concentration of cultural and scientific institutions.

The district boasts geographical advantages. It is in the west of Pudong New Area, the north of Minhang Economic Development Zone, the east of Hongqiao New Area and the south of Huaihai Road c., It is the gateway to Shanghai for trains and vehicles from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong provinces.

The district has a developing traffic network with 150 roads totaling nearly 200 kilometers. It has 38 bus lines. The east-west Zhaojiabang Road and the south -north Cao-xu Road N, are the district's two main thoroughfates. The City Metro Line-One is already in operation, passing through the district from the south to the east the local traffic, reaching different blocks of the city. It is also complete with running water,electricity, gas and telephone systems.

Xuhui District has traditionally been an upper-class living area with nearly 2,000 western-styled garden villas totaling 600,000 square meters and 300,000 square meters of luxury apartment buildings, 127 apartment high-rises and 80 residential complexes. The whole district has a wooded environment, with a green coverage of 11 per cent or 4.2 square meters per head. It also has more than 20 historical and monumental buildings.

Xuhui is one of the city's two major science and technology centers. It is home to 139 research institutes. Most of the city's talents live and work in this district. The Caohejing New Technology Development Zone, the representative of high-new technologies in China, is located in its southwest. Also in the district are 17 institutions of higher learning, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Eastern University of Science and Engineering, Shanghai University of Medical Science. Moreover, the 15 well-known general or special hospitals such as Zhong Shan Hospital, Long Hua hospital, and International Peace Maternal and Child Hygiene Hospital are also located inside. Shanghai Gymnasium and Shanghai Swimming Center in the district are the main facilities for public important sports meetings and public gathering activities in Shanghai.

The district is rich in tourist resources such as the centuries-old Longhua Temple and Londhua Pagoda, Shanghai Botanical Garden, the tombs of the Ming Dynasty scientist Xu Guangqi and Yuan Dynasty loom-inventor Huang Daopo and the patriotic figure Zou Rong in modern history, the residence of Madam Song Ching-ling, the Martyrs's Cemetery, the largest catholic church in the Far- East and the famed Community Church. It also has many high-ranking hotels such as Sheraton Hua Ting Hotel, Donghu Hotel, Hengshan Hotel and Jiaoguo Hotel, for friends from both at home and abroad. Every year the local people hold the Osmanthus Festival, the Peony Festival and the New Year Temple Fair, which have become the important festival for tourist-cultural celebration activities, gathering together touring, shopping and entertainment.

Xuhui is also one of the city's commercial centers. The well known Huaihai Road c. runs across the district. With the most elegant and graceful environment, Xujiahui Commercial Center, is the most highranking shopping center, consisting of Shanghai No.6 Department Store, Hui Lian Commercial Building, Shanghai Orient Shopping Center, The Pacific Department Store, Zhong Xing Department Store and Shanghai Modern Audio/ Video Company, all of which are among the city's leading commercial enterprises.

The good location and investment environment have made Xuhui District a hot spot for overseas investors. More and more overseas investors are coming to initiate enterprises. To date, there are 257 foreign-funded enterprises and 36 pieces of land have been leased, with a space of 25.45 hectares. There are also 659 domestic enterprises funded by companies from other parts of China.

With the quickening of the reform, the people in Xuhui are going all out in its construction vigorously and whole-heartedly. The area's luxury housing complexes and scientific institutions are big advantages in attracting overseas and domestic investors. Together with the encouragement of absorbing foreign and domestic investment and the tertiary industry, priority has been given to the development of real estate, technology, commercial and travel industries--the four pillars of the local economy. Xuhui District will become a modern metropolitan district by the end of this century with a thriving economy, fine urban environment and advanced infrastructure.
