Located at 31o21' north latitude and 121o45' east longitude, Nanhui enjoys the desirable subtropical monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons, an average temperature of 15.5oC and an annual average rainfall of 1,061 mm. Nanhui is a suburban county of Shanghai Municipality and a constituent part of Pudong. It is situated on the southeast tips of Yangtze Delta, with Shanghai proper to the west across the Huangpu River, Pudong New Area to the north, the East Sea on the east and the Hongzhou Bay on the south. In its north, there is Shanghai Urban Out-Ring Road, that can join Shanghai's two big airports. In the northeast is the Pudong International Airport, which is being built. In the southeast tip is an important sea gate of Shanghai. It has been decided to build a 30-kilo crossing the sea bridge. The bridge will begin from the Lu Chao Port to the Da Yang and the Xiao Yang Hills. A deep-water port is to be built for containers in Yangshan. Urban traffic of the county extends in all directions.

Transportation: There are 384 kilometers highways in Nanhui, that is 0.56 kilometer per square kilometer. The second--class highway--the highway from the Shanghai Inner Ring Road to Lu Chao Port, runs through the County. The major planning highways and expressways are the Shanghai Urban Outer Ring Expressway, which links with the city's No.5 Highway, the Nanliu Highway and the Suburban Outer Ring Road. |
Telecommunications: Telephone have been principally program controlled and the transmission is digitized. Telephone installati on capacity is currently 150,000 sets and will be 300,000 sets in the year of 2000.
Electric Power: Nanhui has 220,000-volt, two 110,000-volt and fifteen 35,000-volt power transformer stations. Another two 220,000-volt, five 35,000-volt power transformer stations are being built near the Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Deep-Water Port.
Water Supply: Currently, Nanhui has daily water supply capacity of 350,000 tons. Hangtou Water Plant is one of the biggest plants in Shanghai suburban area. In 2000, the daily water supply will reach 500,000 tons.
Environment Protection: Zhoupu Sewage Treatment Plant has a daily treament capacity of 12,500 tons. The Shanghai 3rd Sewer Pipe runs through Nanhui. There are two sewer lines being planned and among them one is under construction.
Finance: There are several bank branches in Nanhui. They're Agricultrue Bank, Industrical & Commercial Bank, Bank of China, Bank of Construction and Pudong Development Bank. There are also Nanhui Credit Cooperative, and Branch of PICC.
Hotel: There are some hotels concerning foreigners, with complete facilities, comfortable surroundings and thoughtful services, in Nanhui, Nanyuan Hotel, Lu Chaogang Restaurant are two of them.
Tourism: There are more than 50,000 mu of orchards in Nanhui. Every spring, peach trees are in blossoms. Nanhui is worthy of the name of "the Land of Peach Blossoms". Eastern coastal areas are the municipal-level scenic spots. At the present, these places are in prime scales, major scenic spots are the Shanghai Safari Park, the Ancient Bell Park, the East Sea Shooting& Amusement Range, Binhai Magnolia Seaside Resort and the East Sea Movie Paradise,etc..

The abundant actual economic strength of Nanhui lays a solid base for external cooperation. In 1995, the county achieved GNP 5.3 billion Yuan(RMB), industrial and agricultural output 18.8 billion yuan (RMB). In addition to the developed agriculture, Nanhui has been well-known for its grain, cotton, rape oil, fruit, vegetable, pork, poultry, egg, milk, aquatic products and other non-staple food. In recent years, Nanhui has developed and introduced many improved varieties and fine breeds to meet the demands of domestic and overseas markets. |

The agricultural output in 1995 reached 1.25 billion yuan(RMB).
The foundation in industrial development is stable. Besides these traditional backbone industries such as: textile, garments, machinery, metallurgy,etc., a rapid development in new industries have taken place, automobile build-up and the spare parts processing, new building materials, electron & electrical appliances, food processing, to name only a few. Group enterprises of county or municipal level, such as the Huili (group)Corp., have been formed. More than 300 kinds of products have been awarded national or municipal high-quality prizes. Construction, another Nanhui's advantageous industry, has superb design capacity.
Tertiary industry is speeding up. In 1995, the county generated an added value of 1.4 billion Yuan(RMB) and total retail sales reached 3 bilion Yuan (RMB). Tourism is just booming. Five years' Peach Blossom Festivals have attracted one million tourists. A number of new tourism items are under construction. Export oriented economy grows up powerfully. It is estimated that 437 foreign invested enterprises have been approved, with a total investment of 720 million USD, contracted investment of 440 million USD. Foreigners from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan regions and from Japan, the U.S., France, Germany, England and other countries invested here and set up their enterprises. Among them are: American GM Automobile Co., Austrialian BHP Co., British Pierkinton Co., and Japanese Itoch Co.. The export delivery value reached 4 billion Yuan(RMB). Labour reserve is abundant and competent. Nanhui has a labor population of 410,000 and has made nine-year education from primary school to junior middle school universal, 80,000 persons have an education background above senior middle school or polytechnic school, among them more than 10,000 are of higher education and more than 16,000 are specialized technical personnels. Meanwhile, more than 2,300 qualified personnels have been introduced in recent years.

Facing the golden opportunity of opening and developing Pudong and relying on the exceptional geographical advantages, Nanhui is now on the high starting point to build well the "south gate of Pudong, the back garden of Shanghai". An expanding strategy has been drawn up: letting our economic force move northward; laying equal stress on the development of northern part as well as southern part; allowing the superiority of west and east mutual replenishment. |
Huinan Area is the Nanhui's political economic and cultrual centre.
It will be Shanghai's south-wing supplementary city near Pudong
International Air Harbor. Huinan Area has a convenient transportation,
with Hu-Nan Highway, Shanghai Suburban Outer Ring Road leading to the
urban districts and Pudong New Area. Roads in the central town will be
in crisscross square blocks. The town is projected to be 22 square km
with a population of 200,000 and is divided into five functional
parts:
1. Commerce and Trade; the center of finance, trade and
information, accommodated with banks, customshouse, commercial inspection,
shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, entertainment place,etc.;
2. Administrative zone: accommodated with administrative buildings and
supplementary facilities;
3.Tourism Zone: backed by the Shanghai Safari Park to set up various
kinds of tourism facilities;
4.Industrial Zone;
5.Residential zone.
The whole town pays a great attention on gardening and perfecting traffic facilities to build it a beautiful and civilized city.
Zhoupu Area is a major town for Nanhui's economy and an important
industrial and commercial base on the south wing of Pudong New Area.
Located in the northwest of Nanhui and borders on Pudong New Area,
Zhoupu Area is made up of Kangqiao Industrial Zone and Zhoupu Town,
it is projected to cover 34 square km. with a population of 200,000.
The 26 square km Kangqiao Industrial Zone is a Shanghai municipal-level
development zone, and its center is only 6 kilometers away from the
Shanghai Urban Inner Ring Road, the zone is close to Nanpu Bridge,
Xupu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge, Hunan Highway, Kangqiao Road,
Hunan Highway, Kangqiao Road, Urban Outer-Ring Road and the Pudong
Railway pass through Zhoupu and provide it with extremely convenient
transportation. The construction of Zhoupu Area lays emphasis on four
functional pars:
1. Hi-tech, export-oriented economic zone : Rely mainly on high
and new technique, centered on automobile, new-type building material,
electronics, telecommunications equipment, etc;
2.Commercial and trade zone: developing commercial center, large-size
department stores, wholesale markets, etc.;
3.Real estate development zone: combined with reconstruction of old
town, to develop tracts of residence sub-districts and construct various
related accommdations;
4.Storage and transportation zone.
Zhuqiao Area is the site of Pudong International Air Harbor. This special location is the advantage and important support to this area. Zhuqiao Area is projected to cover 10 square km with a population of 800,000. It will be a place of export processing, storage and export agriculture.
Hangtou--Xinchang Area is a growing industrial and commercial zone and Nanhui's hub of communication with Pudong New Area, Minhang District and Fengxian County; Huinan Highway, City's No.5 Highway and Pudong Railway run through this area leading to Shanghai proper and Pudong New Area. As for water transport, Dazhi Canal flows through the central region of this area. Hangtou--Xinchang Area is projected to cover 10 square kilometers with a population of 70,000. It centers on new-type building materials, characteristic products trading and tourism agriculture.
Lu Chao Harbor Area is a developing harbor town, one of the national major fishing harbors and a transport axis linking Shanghai and China's offshore islands. As Shanghai's first class harbor, Lu Chao Harbor is accommodated with customshouse, commodity inspection, quarantine of animals and plants, frontier force, etc. Car passenger ferry and bulk cargo wharf are well equipped and there are seven regular lines to Ningbo, Zhejiang and other places. The crossing-sea bridge, which is from Lu Chao port to Yangshan, will bring Shanghai a deep-water port. There are 10,000 mu peach trees there. It is also a scenic spot for tourists. The area is projected to cover 18 square kilometers with a population of 80,000. Focusing on the goal has been made to build it a "communicate-fishing- trade-tourism" economic harbor.
Laogang Chemical Industry Zone is a specialized industrial zone,
a concentration of the industries of chemicals, paper making, medicine, printing
& dyeing, bleaching, etc. Laogang Chemical Industry Zone is located in the
east of Nanhui Country, close to the East Sea. The planned area is 5 square
km. It is 3km from the centre of the zone to the Shanghai Suburban Out-Ring
Road, 13 km to the Pudong International Airport. There is a 35,000-volt power
transformer station in the zone, The daily water supply reaches 10,000
ton.The Second-Class Sewage Treatment Station is under construction. The
zone has quickened its infrastructure construction and will provide a
favorable investment environment for removing of the urban key industries.
