Jing An is one of the most prosperous commercial districts in Shanghai, and Nanjing Road is the quintessence of the district, with more than one million persons flowing in and out of the district daily. Starting from the beginning of 1993, the 1.8-square-kilometre Nanjing Road area in Jing An has been placed under a large-scale comprehensive development. Phase One and Phase Two projects comprise 20 items for transformation of entire blocks, under which plan 36 commercial and office highrise buildings with a total floor space of 1.419 million metres will be constructed. A basic framework of Nanjing Road modernization will take shape in 1997. The new shopping area will be equal to 3 Nanjing Roads of late 1992.
For years in the Nanjing Road area there have emerged a numder of "distinctive streets" which serve as "bridges of commerce", thereby enhancing the radiative role of Jing An's commerce.
Jing An catering trade is noted for its outstanding chefs versed in different styles of Chinese cuisine who serve new delicacies from tine to time, attracting restaurant goers from all quarters.
