- Geographical location:Hongkou District lies
in the northeast of Shanghai proper, covering an area of
23.47 square kilometers. It borders on the Huangpu
River in the southeast, facing Pudong New Area across
the river, stands against the Suzhou Creek in due south,
adjacent to Huang Pu District, connects Zha Bei District
in the west and is contiguous to Yang Pu and Bao Shan
Districts in the north.
- Communications and transportation:Hongkou
District is easily accessible, conveniently located at
the hub of water, land and air communications.
----Land communications: the district is only 4
kilometers from Shanghai Railway Station. The Inner
Ring Flyover runs through Guang Zhong Road Viaduct and
Yuan Lin Road Viaduct within the district. Wu Song Road
and Si Ping Road that connect the Bund through Wu Song
Road Bridge directly link the Inner Ring Flyover, making
it convenient and fast to get to Bao Shan Steel Complex
and Wu Song to the north, to Hong Qiao and Xu Hui to
the west and to Pu dong to the east. The south--north
traffic corridor of the district connects the Shanghai
commercial center in Da Bai Shu, North Si Chuan Road
commercial street and North Bund within the district
into one integral whole.
----Water communications: Hongkou District is
situated at the converging point of the Huangpu River
and Suzhou Creek of Shanghai. Endowed by nature with
advantageous water transportation, it has long been
known as Shanghai's "door to the sea." Along the river
is a forest of wharfs, which constitute an important
port for the city's import and export of goods. Shanghai
Wi Hong Qiao International Passenger Transport Terminal
for the Shanghai--Hong Kong Route and Shanghai--Japan
Route, the well--known Gong Ping Road Domestic Passenger
Transport Terminal and Ti Lan Qiao Hui Shan Harbor, the
biggest passenger transport terminal of Shanghai to be
built soon, not only provide good service facilities for
international passenger transport but have created
important conditions for domestic passenger transport
to Dalian and Qingdao in North China and Wenzhou, Xiamen
and Guangzhou in South China.
----Air communications: Hong Qiao International
Airport to the west is only 30 minutes' drive. To the
east, the Yangpu Bridge and Nanpu Bridge provide
a thoroughfare to Pudong New Airport now under construction.
- Economic survey:
(1) Taking the industries of export
processing, food processing and gold and silver ornaments processing as
its mainstay, Hongkou District lays stress on developing new products,
part of which have won the title of Excellent Product of Shanghai
Municipality. With the further development of foreign--oriented
economy, the conclusion of transactions in foreign trade of Hongkou
District has grown steadily at a rate of 30% increase per annum. The
district has trade relations with more than 50 countries and regions
across the world.
(2) North Si Chuan Road is one of the famous
commercial streets of Shanghai. Persisting in selling middlings, a
variety of shops, specialty shops and professional shops form a
concentration of shopping. The daily flow of customers is nearly 1.3
million and the annual sales volume reaches 7.3 billion yuan, ranking
first among the central urban districts of Shanghai. Attracting
numerous Chinese and foreign guests, North Si Chuan Road is growing to
be one of the most prosperous shopping centers and most fascinating
recreational centers of Shanghai.
(3) Hongkou District has a good
foundation in science, education, culture, public health and physical
education, and the outlook of infrastructure is improving with each
passing year. Abundant in cultural and tourist resources,Hong Kou
District has 32 major memorial sites, of which 7 are rated as national
and municipal key cultural units under protection. It also has over 40
historical relics. It boasts of 13 star-level hotels, of which 1 is
4--star and 5 are 3--star.
(4) Hongkou District not only has good
environment for investment but has the potentiality of further
development. Over the past few years, many domestic and foreign
businessmen have invested in the district to seek development. The
absorption of foreign capital by agreement has reached 749 million US
Dollars. A number of excellent joint ventures, cooperative enterprises
and solely foreign--invested enterprises have come to the fore, who have
won good reputation and whose products sell well on both domestic and
foreign markets. Among them are a dozen well--known real estate
companies including Jia Li of Hong Kong, Shanghai Ace Bags &
Suitcase Co., Ltd., Campel Western--style Suits Co., and Pacific
Stomatological Hospital.
(5) In addition, Hong Kou District has two
new--emerging development areas. Hong Bei Industrial Area, located on
South Jiang Yang Road, will take stevedoring, container manufacture and
warehousing as its mainstay, develop high and new technology industries
such as microelectronics and biological engineering in a big way and
adjust and develop in the direction of technology intensiveness and
intension of production and marketing. The Shanghai Domestic Trade
Center, located in Da Bai Shu area, is going to be developed into the
national trade center characterized by advanced facilities, good
information, complete function and first-rate management, which will be
mainly engaged in trade of industrial products, combining specialized
and comprehensive trade, wholesale and retail, trade within and out of
the city, trade fair and transaction, year--round and fixed--time trade
and domestic and foreign trade.
