Half Fire, Half Water Yiban Huoyan Yiban Haishui, C-1989)---This film tells the tragic love story of hopelessly cynical and misdirected young man and his girlfriend, an innocent college girl. The young man lives by blackmailing foreigners and Hong Kong business people who sleep with Chinese girls at hotels. He lands in jail and the girl commits suicide. The script is by Wang Shuo ,a young writer who writes about the "lost generation" of young people who have no political beliefs and live only to satisfy their own pleasures. Hibiscus Town (Furong Zhen, C-1987, VC)--- This film chronicles the chaotic decade of the " cultural revolution" ( 1966-1976) through the lives of several men and women in the small town of Hibiscus. The political movements before and during the tumultuous years are strongly denounced in the movie.
