Girl from Hunan (Xiang Nu Xiaoxiao, C-1987, VC)--- A love tragedy adapted from the novel" Xiaoxiao" by Shen Congwen. Xiaoxiao is married to a child husband, but later she falls in love with her family's farmhand and becomes pregnant by him. Her husband's family allows her to bring her son up as her husband's younger brother. On her son's wedding day, Xiaoxiao is asked to sleep with her husband, who has just graduated from school. Gold and Sand(Dalang Taosha, BW-1966, VC)---The last movie made before the "cultural revolution, " this portrays several rural students in the 1992s who are dissatisfied wit life and have fled from their families. Golden Road(Jingguang Dadao, C-1975)--- This stereotypical radical movie uses the falling out of two brothers to highlight the straggle between socialist and capitalist ideology in the rural area. Go Masters(Yipan Meiyou Xiawan De Qi, C-1983, VC )---The vicissitudes in the lives of two go masters and their families during and after the Japanese invasion of China are examined in this Sino-Japanese joint production. One critic siad the film , which won a prize at the Seventh Montreal World Film Festival, " explores the theme of reconciliation and is itself an act of faith between two countries and two different societies. Great River Rushes On (Dahe Benliu, C-1979)---This big budget blockbuster tells the story of a small village in Henan Province over some 20 years. It starts in 1938 when the villagers are forced to flee their homes after the Yellow River dikes are destroyed to block the advancing Japanese invaders. It ends in 1958 when the village collective joins in regional efforts to control the river.
