Xiangzi works hard and keeps away from drinking and gambling so he can save enough to buy his own rickshaw. However, although he marries a rickshaw owner's daughter, he has to sell everything he owns to bury her. The film won the best supporting actress prize at the 1983 Golden Rooster Awards. Later she becomes a waitress, but her refusal to sleep with the customers loses her the job. In the end she has no choice but to follow her mother's footsteps.
