Year of Bed Luck ( Benming Nian,C- 1989, VC)---Adapted from the novel " The Black Snow, " this film is a grim look at the generation that came of age after the "cultural revolution." It is about an ex-convict who had been jailed for being an unwitting participant in a rape and murder and who tries to return to normal life when he is finally released. But he finds he is a social misfit. The film won the Silver Bear Prize at the 40th International Film Festival in West Berlin, the third time a Chinese film has been honored at the festival. Yellow Earth ( Huang Tudi, , C -1985, VC) ---Produced by Guangxi Film Studio, this lyrical film about a young army artist who goes to a remote village on the Loess Plateau is a chief representative of the Fifth Generation Chinese directors. The melodramatic film is best noted for its cinematography. Scenes of the bleak plateau often fill the screen to emphasize the heavy traditional burdens peasants had to bear in Old China. The film's photographer, Zhang Yimou, won the 1985 Golden Rooster award of best cinematography. D: Chen Kaige; C: Xue Bai, Tan Tuo, Wang Xueqi; M: Guangxi.

Young Girl Dresses in Red ( Hongyi Shaonu, C-1985, VC) --- A trouble middle school student who has a penchant for red clothing and for pointing out the mistakes of her teachers. Both practices often get her into trouble. The film, which depicts the thinking of the younger generation, won best picture award at the 1985 Golden Rooster Awards. Youth Everlasting ( Qingchun Wansui, C-1984, VC)---Abased on a novel by Wang Meng written when he was only 19, this film, produced by Shanghai Film Studio, recaptures young people's attitudes and relationships in the early 1950s, just affter the establishment of the People's Republic, D: Huang Shuqin; C: Ren Yexiang; M: Shanghai.

Youth Without Regrets( Qingchun Wu Hui, C-1991)---A bulldozer operator who suffers from a brain tumour is divorced his wife, but in hospital meets a young pretty woman, with whom he falls in love. The woman tries every means possible to comfort him until he dies after a few months. This film is made by Xi'an Film Studio. D: Zhou Xiaowen; C: Zhang Fengyi, Shi Lan, Liu Yunlong, Lu Liping; M : Xi'an.
