Ward No 16 ( Shiliu Hao Bingfang, C-1984, VC) ---Produced by Changchun Film Studio, this film portrays four young women in a tuberculosis ward who have very different views of life and death. One of the four is a village primary school teacher who outshines the others in her optimism towards life and her care for others. Actress Song Xiaoying was so moving in the role of the teacher she won the prize for best supporting actress at the 1984 Golden Rooster Awards. When One Enters Middle Age ( Ren Dao Zhongnian, C-1983, VC)---An adaptation of novel the same title by Shen Rong, an outstanding contemporary Chinese woman writer, this film records the difficulties experienced by a woman oculist in her early 40s to highlight the problems faced by professionals and intellectuals in China over the years especially during the " cultural revolution. White-Haired Girl ( Bai Mao Nu , BW-1950,VC ) Very Popular when it came out, this film tells the tragic tale of a beautiful peasant girl who runs into the mountains to escape the evil clutches of a local landlord and stays there until all her hair has turned white. Wreaths at the Foot of the Mountain ( Gaoshan Xia De Huahuan, C-1985, VC)---Directed by the famous Chinese director Xie Jin from Shanghai Film Studio, this film explores lives of Chinese soldiers and their families during the Sino-Vietnamese War. The film won the prizes of Fifth Golden Rooster and the Eighth Hundred Flowers Award for the best actor, best feature film and best supporting actor.
