Scouting across the Yangtze ( Du Jiang Zhengcha Ji, C-1974, VC )---Set during the Liberation War ( 1945-49), this war movie is about the bravery and wisdom of scouts who get intelligence about the Kuomintang line of defence along the Yangtze River. Sea Battle of 1894 ( Jiawu Fengyun, C-1982) --- A brave captain goes down with his ship in this epic drama about the 1894 sea battle when China's newly founded navy was defeated by the Japanese. D: Lin Nong; C: Li Muoran, Pu Ke, Wang Qiuying; M: Changchun.

Shangganling Battle (Shanggan Ling, BW-1956) --- Set in the Korean war in early 1950s, a group of Chinese People's Volunteer soldiers are blocked in Shangganling mountain area for several days. Shaolin Temple ( Shaolin Si, C-1982)--- A joint production of Hongkong-based Great Wall Movie Enterprises, Phoenix Film Company and Sun Luen Film company, this comedy is filled with kungfu and other acrobatic stunts as it relates how Monk Jueyuan and 12 other chivalrous young monks from Shaolin Buddhist Temple help Li Shimin, founder of the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), capture military governor Wang Shicong and kill the despot, Wang Renze. Sha Ou (Sha Ou, C-1982) --- This is a sad story about a young volleyball player named Sha Ou whose goal in life is to see China's volleyball team beat Japan and become world champions. Song of Youth ( Qingchun Zhi Ge, C-1959, VC)---A young woman student of the 1930s betrays her landlord family by falling in love with a university student and becoming a student revolutionary leader in this film adapted from a novel of the same title by contemporary woman writer Yang Mo. Sparkling Red Star ( Shanshan Hongxing, C-1974)--- One of the most popular films of its days this film portrays a young boy who revenges himself on a local depot after his father has gone off to fight with the Red Army and his mother has been killed in a fire. It was popular mostly because there were so very few other movies people could see at the time. D: Li Jun; C: Zu Xinyun; M: August First.

Spring Festival ( Guo Nian, C-1991)---Set in northeast China, this film vividly describes family life in rural China today by showing how a 13-member family spent the Spring Festival in the Year of the Goat (1991). It reflects the changing family relationships and social values of common Chinese people. Lead actress, Zhao Lirong, won the best actress award at the Fourth Tokyo International Film Festival. Spring River Flows East ( Yijiang Chunshui Xiang Dong Liu, BW-1947 and 1948)--- This epic, considered China's equivalent of "Gone With the wind", was the most significant of all the film of the late 1940s. The two- part film tells the melodramatic story of a family during and after the War of Resistance Against Japan. Sufen, a textile worker, and Zhong Zhongliang, an idealistic schoolteacher, fall in love and marry in the course of their war work. Later, Zhang leaves his family for Chongqing, where he becomes the lover of fashionable hostess. Meanwhile, Sufen, along with her son and mother-in-law, waits patiently for news of Zhang, never giving up despite their miserable circumstances. The story reaches a tragic climax when Sufen discovers that the husband of the woman she has been working for as a maid is in fact her own husband .. Spring Silkworm ( Chuncan, BW-1933) ---Adapted from the short story " Spring Silkworm" by Mao Dun, the film is a portrait of the economic decline in the Zhejiang countryside outside Shanghai as foreign imports undermine native silk production, It tells how the dreams of Chinese silkworm raisers are shattered by landlords and foreign silk imports. Storm ( Feng-bao C-1959 )--- This epic movie reconstructs the 1923 railway strike in which strike leaders Lin Xiangqian and Shi Yang were arrested and later executed by the warlord, Wu Peifu. d: Jin Shan; C: Li Xiang, Jin Shan, Wu Xue, Tian Hua; M: Beijing.

Street Angels ( Malu Tianshi, BW-1937) --- A film about China's underclass, this 1937 film tells the story of Xiao Yun and XiaoHong, two girls who flee the war in northeast China and arrive in Shanghai. One is forced to become a prostitute and another a dancer at a brothel, but their how status wins them the sympathy of some members of a street gang. Two of them fall in love with the girls and save them form the brothel, but the brothel owner conspires with local despots to catch them... D: Yuan Muzhi; C: zhaoDan, Zhou Xuan; M: Mingxing.

Street Knight ( Malu Qishi, C-1991) ---A woman is rejected by her lover after she becomes pregnant and in a desperate bid to find a husband runs into the path of a motorcycle operated by a delivery man who then, out of a sense of guilt, agrees to take care of her, even though his own wife is also pregnant. The deliveryman is caught between the girl, his wife and the hospital... D: Ge Xiaoying; C: Xie Yuan, Ma Xiaoqing, Yue Hong, Jin Lili; M: xi'an.

"Stupid " Manager ( Shamao Jingli, C-1989) ---A comedy about a group of young people who open an inn that brings them fortune and hardship. D: Duan Jishun; C: Chen Qian, Chen Peisi, SongDandan; M : Shenzhen.

Sun Yat-sen ( Sun Zhongshan, C-1987,VC)---- Winner of the Seventh Golden Rooster Awards for the best actor, this is a biopic of Dr Sun Yat-sen, founder and first precedent of the Republic of China. It was the first attempt by mainland film makers to portrays Sun Yat-sen and his wife Soong Ching Ling. D: Ding Yinna; C: Liu Wenzhi, Liu Simin, Zhang Gai; M: Pearl River.

Sweet Cause ( Tianmi De Shiye, C-1980, VC)--- Two rural families are profiled to show Changjing attitudes towards family planning in China's countryside. The film won the Third Hundred Flowers Award for best director. D: Xie Tain; C: Li Xiuming, Li Liansheng; M: Beijing.
