Red Detachment of Woman ( Hongse Niangzijun, C-1960, VC) --- A woman raised to be a daughter-in-law of a wealthy family rejects the privileged life to become company leader of the country's first all-woman Red Army unit. The film, which is set in th e1930s on Hainan Island, won the best feature film prize at the First Hundred Flowers Awards. D: Xie Jin; C: Zhu Xijujan, Wang Xiangang, Xiang Mei; M: Tianma.

Red Sorghum (Hong Gaoliang, C-1988, VC)--- This film looks through the eyes of a child at the ups and downs of a peasant liquor distillery in Shangdong province in the 1930s and 40s before and during the Japanese invasion. The film won the Golden Bear, the top award at the 28th International Film Festival in West Berlin. It was the first time a Chinese film had won such a major award. it also was named best feature film at the Hundred Flowers and Golden Rooster Awards, two top film awards in China. Romance at Lushan ( Lushan Lian, C-1981, VC) --- An American-Chinese girl comes to China to see the sights and falls in love with a Chinese graduate student. The film is set in picturesque Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi Province. It was the winner of the Hundred Flowers best actress award for 1981. D: Huang Zumo; C: Zhang Yu, Guo Kaimin; M: Shanghai.

Romance of Emperor Qianlong ( Fengliu Qinalong, C-1991) ---This film is based on a legend set in 18th-century China during the reign of Emperor QianLong, the fourth monarch of the Qing Dynasty. As a young man the emperor, who styles himself the " Solitary Gallant, " investigates incognito the rebellious "White Tiger Alliance. " While on his mission, he falls in love with three young women, one after the other. During the suppression of the alliance, the emperor gets into trouble, but on every occasion one of the three women risks her life to save him. Eventually, all the members of the evil alliance are killed. The three women find themselves facing the toughest problem of their lives...
