, C-1988, VC)--- Adapted from Pu Yi's autobiography " From Emperor to Citizen, " the film embraces a huge historical sweep. It travels from the end of the Qing Dynasty ( 1644-1911) to the first republic of Sun Yat-sen; from World War II to the founding of the People's Republic in 1949; from the re-education programmes of the 1950s to the start of the " cultural revolution" in1966. It tells the story of how the spoiled, self-centred ex-emperor recognized the emptiness of his past life.
