Last Emperor ( Modai Huangdi , C-1988, VC)--- Adapted from Pu Yi's autobiography " From Emperor to Citizen, " the film embraces a huge historical sweep. It travels from the end of the Qing Dynasty ( 1644-1911) to the first republic of Sun Yat-sen; from World War II to the founding of the People's Republic in 1949; from the re-education programmes of the 1950s to the start of the " cultural revolution" in1966. It tells the story of how the spoiled, self-centred ex-emperor recognized the emptiness of his past life. His process of transformation from a "god" into an ordinary mortal at Fushun Prison in northeast China is painful, but eventually quite liberating. The film won nine Oscars in 1988, including best picture. Last Empress ( Modai Huanghou, C-1987, VC)---The story of China's last royal household. The empress Wan Rong, influenced by Western ideas on monogamy, clashed with Pu Yi's second wife, Wen Xiu, who suffered the empress's insults for nine years. The emperor, however, favoured Wan Rong, and his second wife remained a virgin. Eventually Wen fled the palace and the emperor reluctantly agree to a divorce. Regarding it as a deep disgrace, however, Pu Yi vented his anger on Wan Rong and refused to live with her. She gradually became addicted to opium and later became pregnant by her bodyguard. Laughter in Moon Village ( Yueliangwan De Xiaosheng , C-1982, VC) --- This film is about the nature of politics in China before in 1980s. The hero, Jiang Maofu, is a hardworking farmer who slowly becomes better off, which is risky because it could makes him the target a campaign. The father of his betrothed senses the danger and breaks off their engagement. But the wind of politics changes direction and Maofu suddenly finds himself being held up as a model farmer. d: Xu Suling; C: Zhong Xinghuo, Kou Zhenhai, Zhang yan; M: Shanghai.

Legend of Tianyun Mountain ( Tianyuanshan Chuanqi, C-1981, VC ) --- With the 1057 anti-rightist movement and rehabilitation efforts two decades later as its theme, this film centres around four characters: a young geologist, Luo Qun, wrongly labeled a "rightist"; his one-time friend, Wu Yao, who accepts the verdict and obstructs efforts to rehabilitate Luo; Luo's sweetheart, Song Wei, who is pressured to break with him and later marries Wu Yao; and Feng Qinglan, the heroine of the film, who marries Luo and assists him in his research despite the hardships they face. Let Women Go Away from War ( Zhanzheng Rang Nuren Zoukai, C-1988) --- This movie looks at war from quite a different angle, focusing on a group of women separated from their husbands and finaces,who have gone to the front to take part in war. Liao Zhongkai ( Liao Zhongkai , C-1984, VC) ---Produced by Zhujiang Film Studio, this film was the first cinematic attempt by a mainland studio to depict dr Sun Yat-sen , Soong Ching Ling and ChiangKai-shek on the screen. It recounts the life of Liao Zhongkai, one of the founders of the Kuomintang and promoter of cooperation between the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party. The film's realistic portrayals of the great people in modern Chinese history won it the 1984 Golden Rooster awards for best director and best actor. Life ( Rensheng, C- 1985, VC )--- Produced by Xi'an Film Studio, this feature film follows the fortunes of a village school teacher gets a job in town through influential connections but who winds up thwarted both in his love life and career. D: Wu Tianmin; C: Zhou Lijing, Wu Yufang; M: xi'an.

Lin Family Shop (Lin Jia Puzi, C- 1959, VC )--- Based on a novel of the same title by well-known contemporary writer Mao Dun, this movie depicts the fortune of a family in early in 1930s , whose shop goes bankrupt in the fierce competition which capitalists supported by foreign capital. Lin Zexu(Lin Zexu, C-1959, VC ) --- The famous Qing Dynasty offical Lin Zexu, who strongly opposed the importation of opium to china and banned the sale of it in Guangzhou, is the subject of this biographical movie. Li Shuangshuang (Li Shuangshuang, BW-1962, VC ) The relationship of a married couple reflects the struggle between those who oppose and those who advocate a people's commune in this sitcome set in the countryside in the late 1950s. Little Soldier ZhangGa ( Xiaobing Zhang Ga, BW-1963, VC ) ---A naughty boy during the war against the Japanese invasion turns into an excellent scout in this popular children's movie, which is also enjoyed by adults for the fine acting of the child actor. Liu Sanjie ( Liu Sanjie, C-1960, VC) ---A woman who enjoys popularity in Guangxi zhuang Autonomous Region for her beautiful songs in featured in what is considered to be one of the country's best musical films. D: Su Li ; C: Huang Wanqiu, Liang Yin, Zhangjuguang; M: Changchun and Guangxi.

Local Accent ( xiangyin, C-1984, VC )--- This Zhujiang Film Studio film unfolds a tragic tale of a peasant woman in a remote rural village. The woman is bound to the feudal tradition, realistic performance of the lead actress and the fine cinematography helped the film win the 1984 Golden Rooster award for best feature film. Look at This Family ( Qiao Zhe Yijiazi , C-1980, VC)--- A starstudded cast performs in this comedy about the loves and aspirations of a group of urban youth. Liu Xiaoqing's excellent performance in this film won her the award for best supporting actress in the Third Hundred Flowers Awards.
