Amid the Howling Wind (Luo Shan Feng, C-1990)---A harrowing tale set in Taiwan about a woman who is abandoned by her husband's family when she fails to produce a baby. Devastated, she enters a convent and becomes a nun. But then a young man enters the convent on a study retreat and the two fall in love. When she becomes pregnant, their affair is revealed and she is driven away. Meanwhile, the man returns to his original girlfriend. Song Jia, who plays the ill-starred heroine, won best actress at the 14th Hundred Flowers Awards. D: Bai Chen; C: Songjia, Li Qiong, Liu Xin; M:Guangxi.

Among Elephants (Zou jin Xiangqun, C-1990)--- An old man of the Hani nationality discovers a treasure cave in the primitive forest in this children's film set in the 1980s in Yunnan Province. When he prepares to report his discovery to the State, he assaulted by a smuggler. Before dying, he teaches his only grand daughter a folk a folk song that hints at the location of the cave. She goes to a town to hind an old friend who decipher the hidden message in the song, but as soon as she gets there the smuggling ring tails her. . . An Army of Iron Will in the Flames of War(Liehuo Jinggang, C-1991)---This film is adapted from Liu Liu's novel of the same title published in 1958. It tells the story of a platoon of the Eighth Route Army fighting the Japanese invaders and their Chinese collaborators in central Hebei Province in the early 1940s. The film praises the patriotic and heroic spirit of the Chinese people and the"fish-and -water" relationship between the people and the people's army. Ashma(Ashima, C-1964, VC)---Ashma, a young Bei nationality woman, catches the eye of a chieftain's son. The girl resists his advances, saying she belongs to Ahei, but she is lured to the chieftain's home. Ahei, a brave young goatherd, uses his magic arrows in an effort to rescue Ashma from her captors. The lovers almost manage to escape before Ashma is drowned in a gigantic flood, and turns to stone. This is the legendary origin of the Stone Forest in present-day Yunnan Province.
